Default 1958 Trunk question.

Does anyone have any pictures of a trunk on a 58 vette. I saw one vette out there but can not tell if it is a real original 58 vette trunk/rear. I noticed that when I took the spare out....that cavity sounded like it was plastic. Could not really tell though. Any info is appreciated.

Thanks

Mike tell me specifically what you need shots of and I will take them tonight and E-mail them to you. If you’re close to Ventura County you are welcome to swing by and look at the trunk all you want. The trunk is the one piece of my car that is original and undamaged by previous Bubba work.

i am looking at shots of the raea where the spare goes. Does it usually match the original body color? Also does it seems like it is made of plastic. Any pictures would help.

Thanks

Mike,

The spare tire tub is definitely fiberglass. It is comprised of a number of sections that go together to form the circle. It has embossed style lines at the bottom. Then there is a wood cover that goes over the whole that has a metal hold down ring in the center that a long bolt goes through to fasten it down. There was also a rubber mat that detailed the trunk bottom and a hardboard liner that covers the back wall. (at least that is what mine has) I do not know what the color was originally but mine is black and most that I have seen are sought of the same overspray black that mine is.(I am sure some of the more knowledgeable pros on here can answer that better then me.)

I did take a number of pictures of it last night so just let me know were to e-mail them to.

Yup, it's "plastic" - the entire body is fiberglass. The trunk area (and the trunk lid inner panel) on 58's is painted the interior trim color; that changed to exterior body color in '59 or '60 sometime.

Default I just sent you some pictures

I just sent you about 5 pictures of an original 58 trunk. The color is the same as the interior, including the inside of the trunk lid.

The inside of the tire tub area is cut almost in 1/2. The rear section comes out so you can get access to the rear bumpers and brackets and also the exhaust tail pipes that go thru the bumpers.

The truunk itself is unique to the 58 as it has spears mounted to the exterior. The inside area of the decklid has small flat spots for the spear pins to mount easily. A 59-60 trunk will work, but the spears will not line up properly, and inside mounting clips will not mount smoothly.

There are also small little covers on both rear sides for access to the exhaust pipes. And of course, the wood cover, large screw secure the tire and jack under it.

In the old days, we use to remove the tire, add a five pound bag of ice and a case of your favorite beverage.......and bingo, the first "cooler" was created complete with drain hole for the melting ice.
