I was trying to replace the parking brake bulb behind the dash with out removing the dash, I found a capacitor with a black wire and spring connector attached to nothing. The capacitor is located behind the tach and just above the water temp gauge, can you help me? Where does this copacitor lead go? It seems to have a 2" lead. I am also having trouble with my headlight in the down position bulb , it is always on???? thanks Chuck
That's a radio noise suppression capacitor, shown in the A.I.M. in Section U69, Sheet A4, item 6; it originally had a "Scotchlok"-type piercing splice connector on it that went on the tan wire to the "Brake" warning light bulb. It was only there so you wouldn't hear a "pop" in the radio when you raised or lowered the parking brake handle from the switch making or breaking - it has no other function.
The headlight warning bulb (#257 special flashing bulb) should only be on with the headlights on and the buckets not fully open; it's controlled by a microswitch on each headlight motor. The microswitches are normally closed with the buckets closed, which grounds that circuit (20-ga. gray/black wire) and lights the lamp; when the buckets are both fully open, the switches open, disconnecting the ground from the circuit, and the bulb goes out. You'll probably find one of the switches loose or failed, or that gray/black wire is shorted to ground somewhere.
