Default Dim Gauge Lights

My 1964 coupes' dash lights are dim. Could a bad ground on the instrument cluster cause this?

Also, where is the bulb(s) that light up the heater/radio indicators?

Old bulbs will also cause them to be dim, the efficiency goes down with age. How long since new bulbs have been installed? Also, the dash bulbs run thru a resistor in the headlight off/on switch, the switch could be bad.

The radio has a bulb slid into the case on a special holder, I believe the heater controls have a similar holder for the bulbs.

The heater bezel lamps hang from the clock mount frame on 2 inch long brackets that slip onto the clock mount frame at about the 5 and 7 oclock positions.

There are brighter bulbs for dash lamps, but they are out of production. The warehouse in CA that has some supplies Atlanta Bulb Co - who will charge $1 per bulb

1816 bulbs are specified. 1817 are brighter.

Buy a new light switch from Auto Zone for 12.00 and try it. It will make a big difference in the dash lighting., let me know how it works, I did it on my 67 coupe with great success. Chuck

A few dim gauges are probably a result of burned out bulbs. Check out this picture of the back of a midyear cluster. The Speedo and tach have two bulbs. If one is out the gauge will be dim.

If all gauges are dim the headlight switch is the culprit. A bad ground would probably cause intermittent operation.

You should make sure the right bulbs are being used. There are a few bulbs that fit but are dimer.

The radio dial light is internal to the radio. Here's a photo of the "torpedo light" that illuminates the heater controls; it clips into the slot at the bottom of the clock housing (A/C cars have two more, in the slots at 4 and 8 o'clock) , and the upturned end of its retaining clip touches the outside of the clock case to get its ground through the clock.
