Old bulbs will also cause them to be dim, the efficiency goes down with age. How long since new bulbs have been installed? Also, the dash bulbs run thru a resistor in the headlight off/on switch, the switch could be bad.
The radio has a bulb slid into the case on a special holder, I believe the heater controls have a similar holder for the bulbs.
The heater bezel lamps hang from the clock mount frame on 2 inch long brackets that slip onto the clock mount frame at about the 5 and 7 oclock positions.
There are brighter bulbs for dash lamps, but they are out of production. The warehouse in CA that has some supplies Atlanta Bulb Co - who will charge $1 per bulb
My 1964 coupes' dash lights are dim. Could a bad ground on the instrument cluster cause this?
Also, where is the bulb(s) that light up the heater/radio indicators?
Buy a new light switch from Auto Zone for 12.00 and try it. It will make a big difference in the dash lighting., let me know how it works, I did it on my 67 coupe with great success. Chuck
A few dim gauges are probably a result of burned out bulbs. Check out this picture of the back of a midyear cluster. The Speedo and tach have two bulbs. If one is out the gauge will be dim.
If all gauges are dim the headlight switch is the culprit. A bad ground would probably cause intermittent operation.
The radio dial light is internal to the radio. Here's a photo of the "torpedo light" that illuminates the heater controls; it clips into the slot at the bottom of the clock housing (A/C cars have two more, in the slots at 4 and 8 o'clock) , and the upturned end of its retaining clip touches the outside of the clock case to get its ground through the clock.
