Hey guys, My pop has been wanting one just for piece of mind for his 66. I have called around and no one seems to have them ie Zip, LICS, Paragon, etc.. Does anyone know of a source of these elusive locking gas caps? A forum member had some for sale 6 months ago or so but I missed the boat on one... Any help is greatly appreciated.. Dave..
I think I may still have one that I removed from the '63 I had several years ago. I'm out of town right now but once I get back to NC I'll look and then let you know.
Thanks guys I didn't think to check the local parts stores, I thought that with the big gas cap that it would be a hard to find corvette only part.
Mike ya man if you don't mind that would be greatly appreciated.
If anyone else has bought one recently I would be greatful if you could point me in the direction of the vendor you have purchased it from.. Thanks in advance.. Dave...
Those caps are pretty scarce; very large diameter compared to today. I posed a similar question on the NCRS Technical Board last spring and did not come up with a catalogue vendor. But a member did send the one in the pic free of charge. It did not have a key but a locksmith made me a couple for about $15.00. If I remember correctly that person said that he could not give them away at Carlisle so he may have several more. You may wish to post your question in that forum.
mmmm, $95??? wowee, must come with a g-tee of top flight . .
no offense I hope.
Dave - FWIW, I got mine off of ebay this past summer, and 'twas a lot less. (I then already knew I would be keeping my C2 at my parking garage at work for the next nine months, wanted a little peace of mind). Mine has a grained texture, gave me cause to ask the NCRS guys what was a real GM dealer product back in da day, the consensus answer was smooooth chrome, the pebble texture came in the 70s I think. So smooth chrome if you are into that kinda thing.
And then a kind NCRS-er emailed me about the serious lack of real protection afforded by said locking gas caps, and he was right, if you know the trick . . . for .05 cents I'll tell you too via email . . . or did I let it slip already
From the "wayback machine": while on a research mission for another member, going through my collection of "CORVETTE NEWS", (Vol.II, #3) (by GM), found a reference to locking gas cap on a '68:
"PART # 985919, $5.52" LOTSA LUCK Cruz
I'm glad that you found access to these. The topic amused me at first, and then made me think...
I couldn't imagine someone leaving a C2 where you could steal the gas out of it, and conversely I couldn't imagine where someone would ONLY steal the gas... (i.e. I would think they would be more tempted to just steal the car...)
Sad that we have to address these kind of issues...
Yep it amused me too when Pop talked about wanting one.. However he works the 11 to 7 at the Anheuser-Busch plant. Not to worried about it being stolen b/c the gate guards know who's it is. However you never know who your enemy's are at a large plant like that. I think that is his biggest worry... not about someone stealing his gas.
thats why a lot of cars have the push to open type gas doors from the factory. its more of a vandelism deturent. there are some crazy/jealous people out there that would love to see the old vette sputtering down the road after they added a cup of sugar or something to the fuel.
Did you ever find a locking gas cap? I got back home and dug through my boxes but was unable to find the one I had. If you still haven't found one let me know and I'll keep looking for it.
See Ya,
Michael

should do the trick if you want a locking gas cap for your C2
That looks like a nice deal if you can get it before it is bid up over the next 23 hours remaining in the auction. I recently bought two new locking caps; one for the 62 for $9.99 and one for the 63 which ran $70. There also were a couple of used caps on e-Bay just last week that might still be available.
