One of my winter projects is to find a Hurst shifter for my 66. (stock 4-spd)
What is the correct hurst version to look for, I see them on ebay from time to time but some have a straight shaft and others have curved
Can someone provide a picture/ part number/ install hints?
Can I use the original mounting plate and shifter rods?
I just picked up a spare set up for my car. I'll try to remember to take a pic and post it.
The one in my car is not a Corvette shifter. I had to buy the mounting bracket (from MrGasket/Hurst) , but the GM linkage worked better than the Hurst - so I have used that for 6-7 years - no problems.
I have the 7inch straight c2 Hurst handle for the shifter - if you need one.
A couple guys out here, Blkblt and Milehigh66, replaced their stock shifter with an original looking Hurst. They both really like them. Get in touch with either of them if that's something you are interested in.
I had one of the curved ones on my Muncie when I got it. I really liked it. So much that when I got my Tremec I cut up one of the curved ones because I liked the look... The one with the curve is a Hurst Comp circa 63-67 these where welded to the the shifter assy vs the straight ones that from what I've seen are all bolt on jobbers...Dave...
The correct Hurst shifter your looking for is the Hurst "Competion Plus" available almost everywhere. If you buy and install it you could also purchase one of those hurst shifter handles that look like the stock corvette shifter. Any Corvette part supplier carries this item. It bolts right in (2 bolts). That way you have the best of both worlds. A Hurst shifter with a stock looking shifter handle. I have the exact same set-up in my BB '65.
Thanks for the replies,
It would appear either straight or curved is "OK" (matter of choice) and the Competition Plus is the one to look for.
Magicv8, if you do get a photo that would be nice!
Thanks again,
Chuck
well, i have tried a non-corvette hurst shifter and i recently bought a c2 corvette hurst shifter. neither worked. the arms for the linkage hit my crossmember. i didnt want to take a torch or plasma cutter to my car so i just put the factory one back in. the hurst had a mounting plate that came with it. it can only go one way. oh well, at least its back in running condition now.
