I was surfing the gmpartsdirect site, and noticed they have a half dozen or so balancers listed. Any idea of how to tell which one would be the right diameter and have the fins like the originals?
RLH,
None have fins like the original - that's why the originals are so friggin expensive. GMPP does make one that is very close to the original without the fins -- think you can pick it up for about $90.
Whatever you end up buying make sure the crank keyway to timing mark relationship matches your timing chain cover and tab. I think the variations in keyway to timing mark is a major cause of timing issues.
Mine sure seems to be closer to 6" even -- maybe 6-1/16" at the most. Things are rather cluttered with belts/pulleys/pump & hard to get at accurately for the moment. I think it is OEM, but that's what I'm trying to verify. My GM parts catalog shows 3896903 is for only '66 & '67 w/base engine, although I can't locate any numbering on mine. Other midyears & spec/HP show different p/ns in catalog. Does anyone have example out or perhaps on an engine stand that they could measure? Thanks.
'58-'61 283's and '62-'65 327/300 and below were 6"; '62-'65 327/340hp and more were the 8" "finned"; '66-'68 327/300 were 6-3/4"; '66-'68 327/350hp and '69-'82 350's were 8" non-finned (this one is still available from GM).
'66-'69 hydraulic-lifter 427 BB's used a 7", solid-lifter 427 BB's used several different 8".
