Default Headlight Motors

I have seen information on the forum on how to rebuild the headlight motors. I haven't seen anything describing the removal and reinstallation process for the motors. I remember reading a post once where the author said it was a real pain getting them out and putting them back in. Can someone describe the removal and reinstallation process? Thanks

Removal of the headlight motors is not that bad. The problem is you cannot see what you are doing and you are working upside down. Removal is simple - unplug the wires, remove the mounting bracket and ground wire, then remove the spring clip and slide the motor off the pivot. Make sure the motor is not into one of the stops (move the handwheel if necessary so there is not pressure on the pivot stop). All of this is easier if you remove the hood to give you more room to work. Study the service manual so you know where all these parts are. Removal takes less than 2 minutes.

Removal & reinstallation of the headlamp motors is a piece of cake. Removal, reinstallation & realignment of the headlamp buckets, however, is a real *^%#$@%&* of a job!!!!!

By the way, roll the headlamp buckets partially open to take the pressure off the motor before removing the motor!!

I have found that looking down the area between the open hood and the nose, with a small mirror, around 6x6 inches resting in there makes finding the fastners easy.

I had good luck removing my grill and looking up into that area from laying on creeper below. Beats removing the hood!

I also think if you spend some time looking 'up' at them, you can get more familiar with them as some guys have here, working almost by feel.

Last thought, if you leave the hood on, make sure you put a bolt through the safety hole in the support. It would be VERY painful if someone bumped the hood and it closed on your hands/arms. Dennis

It's not that bad to do if you take the hood off. Taking the grill and bumpers off is way to much work to do and not necessary..
