Merry Christmas from downunder - or should I say happy holiday season? It made the TV news here that it is politically incorrect in the USA to say "Merry Christmas". The temperature here is 42 degrees C today!

My 61 has 4 holes along the lower edge of the firewall where the floor pan joins the lower edge of the firewall. There are 2 on each side - see attached picture of right side looking from the engine bay. Can anyone tell me if these holes should be there? I see that Corvette Central lists a splash shield #571072 that looks like it might cover over this area but I can't find it in the AIM or find any pictures or reference in Noland Adams' book.

They look like drain holes. I am not sure these are factory but a previous owner must have put them there for some reasion. Do you have any "high water marks" on the interior.

I owned a Triumph Spitfire when I was a kid living in Texas where hard rains happen often. The first time I left the top down all day at work I had to punch holes in the floor to drain the 6" lake in the floor.

John:

A belated Merry Christmas to you also and do not believe everything (anything?) that the US press prints.

If I am interpreting your picture correctly, I would say that these holes should not be there. How large are the holes, how far apart are they, and do they go through to the inside of the firewall? The splash shield does not attach at this location.

Yikes is about right. You should try mixing resin for corvette repairs in this heat, you have about 10 minutes to do the job before the resin is going hard, but you do get a good solid repair.

Here is the view of the same area but from the other side, taken looking at the footwell on the right side. As you can see the holes are there, approx 3/4 inch diameter, 14 inches apart. I use inches for you guys, we use metric over here. I guess what I really need to know is whether they should be there. Sounds like that is a negative. Nothing that some quick work with the grinder, some mat and the rapidly hardening resin can't fix.

Hey Andy60,

My car came from Hopewell, Virginia. Is that anywhere near you?

I shipped it all the way from there to outback Australia. You need dedication to own an old vette here.

John,

Yes Hopewell about 25 miles (40.2336 kilometers) from me. It is a little town.

Let me know if I can bring anything over for you this summer (your winter). I will be out your way his June/July. We have an travel plan but I do not know what it will be. We, 25 of us, all family, will be there for 3 weeks.

Andy

No, those holes are not supposed to be there.

Andy,

I'm sure you'll have enough luggage without carrying bits for me, but thanks anyway. Do you know where you will be going over here? I suspect you won't be close to me, I'm almost right in the centre of Queensland, about 700km from the beach. We don't get many international tourists out here but if you've got the time it is a great place to visit and winter is the best time of year here. It never rains and the temperature range is usually 6-10 degrees C in the morning and up to mid 20s in the day.

This is a link to info about Longreach.

John, if the car happens to be VIN #313, I drilled holes in the floor in 1962 to let water out of the floor pan so as not to rot the carpet

Dick,

Vin #6947. Seems like drilling holes was a common thing to do back then. I've repaired the holes now. It hardly ever rains here anyway.

John.
