greetings,
we are replacing halfshaft u joints in a '65. we checked in with the 1963 shop manual for refresher info and came across the following statement on page 4-17; ' rotate yolks so that trunion seats are phased 90 degrees apart'. that statement sailed right over my head. can someone please clarify ? I see only one way to install.
thnx.

That is wierd. The only way I have ever heard of "phasing" is on a driveshft where one end can be removed. With the haftsafts being one piece there is no way to change the phase.
Could they be talking about the actual zirk fittings. It is required that they be out of phase when you press them in so that you can grease them... Dave..
I looked up that passage in the shop manual. It is in reference to installation of the half shaft. What it is saying is insert the inboard u-joint and install the u-bolts, then turn the outer u-joint saddle (trunion) so that it is 90* from the inner u-joint saddle. You have to do this to install the half shaft because the u-joints themselves are installed at 90* angles to each other on the half shaft.
Basically they are just stating the obvious but saying it in a way that is is somewhat confusing. If the outer saddle wasn't phased 90* from the inner saddle you wouldn't be able to install the half shaft because the outer u-joint wouldn't line up with its saddle.
thanks to all for the interest and replies. sometimes the wording in a tech manual makes a task seem more complicated than it really is.
happy new year to all!!!
