Default 65 Auto Trans Removal - Remove Engine?

My wife's 65 is leaking Transmission fluid and is a 76K original car. Decided we would replace seals and now transmission specialist says removing the trans is tricky in C2's and wants my mechanic to remove the engine and trans then send trans to him for service. I don't have the space or time to consider taking out the trans or engine myself.

If this is the best way to do service the transmission then I will do it and maybe have the engine rebuilt since all the labor to take it out and put it back could be wasted if the engine decides to have a problem in 5-10K miles. Seems like having to take the engine out to get the trans out is a bit drastic.

Any advice or experience that can be shared?

Thanks in advance for advice.

I just talked to Jim Gessner and he says absolutely the only way to go for ease of removal of the transmission. Starting at the front dismantle every thing in the way and using a good hoist and helper slowly move the engine and trans forward carefully and take it out. It is a nightmare apparently to try to remove the trans by itself and then worse trying to get it back in place correctly.

I think I will take pictures and document the process when we do it.

Given the choice, I'd rather remove engine to service the trans (manual or automatic). Done it both ways. Less back ache.

Believe it or not, the engine comes out easier than it looks. Then the engine bay is wide open to access the transmission. I remove the front motor mounts, lower the engine to the frame and this gives you lots of access to the bell housing bolts. Good luck.

The powerglide will drop right out without moving the engine. With the trans mount removed from the crossmember there is plenty of room. The only time I have had to move the engine for a trans removal/install in a midyear is when I am dealing with a 700R4 conversion. I think an auto is easier to drop then a manual in these cars. Default Autotrans Removal

I agreee I have pulled an automatic trans out from a C2 and its easy. The biggest problem with the car on jack stands is getting it high enough to slid it out.
