I have just found out that my trans. case is shot ('66 M-22). I have been quoted a price for a replacement original muncie case at $1,200. I have heard about a re-engineered case by Auto Gear Co. that will accept my original gear set (which for the most part is OK). Question: Have any of you guys heard of this outfit? Is this case a good or better substitute? Any help on this would be appreciated.
Just what exactly is wrong with the gear case. Aluminum can be welded up and machined.
The way I understand it is that apparently the hole where the shaft exists the case is badly out of round. I know that the case could be refurbished but since it's not original to the car (it's out of a '70 chevelle) I don't see the need to rebuild it. Now I have the option of obtaining a new after-market case ($300 to $400) or a salvage case ($1200). The cost isn't as much of an issue to me, but if a brand new case would work better I would lean toward the new case. My car hasn't been a numbers matching car since long before I got my hands on it and It's not a concern for me.
A new beefed up case, iron midplate, and the M22 gears you have should allow for one stout transmission. Maybe you could recover some cash by selling your real M22 case on EBAY.
I had the same thing go on my case where the counter shaft is pressed into the front of the case. A good repair is to bush the hole and its better than new.
:o
There are a number of well-known Muncie rebuilders out there who can machine and bush that hole - it's done all the time; no need to spend a fortune on a new case unless it has other problems that can't be dealt with.
You can call Brian up from SK speed at 631-957-9427. He has a huge selection of good used cases if you need some correct numbers. He has by far the largest collection of used and NOS cases.
