Can anyone help me identify a 327ci engine and heads? There are two numbers stamped into the pad behind the waterpump on the right hand side, FIF20HF and 5103333. On the left rear of the engine there is a large size cast into the block, 3782870, Just above the number there are 10 dots in about a 1" circle with an inner arrow pointing to the dot at about 4 o'clock. The heads have 2 humps on the front outboard ends, the outermost one seem to be somewhat flatter than the inner one.
That's a '65 327/300, originally installed in a '65 Corvette produced on November 30, 1964. The "F" as the third character in the "FIF20HF" is actually a number, not a letter - could be either 0, 1, or 2 - most likely a "0" (October) or "1" (November) to make sense with the car's assembly date. There will also be a casting date on the passenger side rear flange of the block. If the heads are original to the block, they'll be casting #3782461; you have to pull the valve covers to see the casting number and date. The "casting clock" says the block was cast during the fourth hour of the shift.
Thanks for the information. This engine is installed in my 62. I knew the engine wasn't original when I bought the car. I traced the car back 3 owners to the guy who changed the engine and he told me he thought it came from a 65 vette so now you've confirmed it.
Is this something I should look at selling to someone who has a 65 and needs and original engine? My car will never be oriiginal so I doubt that the car is worth any more with the present engine than any other.
I would repost that number on the block on this forum. Who knows, someone here may have the 65 vette with matching VIN which that engine came out of. Plus, I think there is a midyear registry that may have the VIN of the original vette listed.
Just the other day, someone posted on here that they had some original documentation that was reunited with the current vette and owner!
