Default Pretty Muncie !

Reassembled my Muncie - I wished they looked like this forever. Anyhow, it is very difficult to shift this thing on the bench. Have not added any fluid. When the mainshaft was still out I could shift from gear to gear but it wasn't easy - very choppy. All gears a new, new sliders, all small parts are new. Hubs were deurred and the slider/key/hubs slid smoothly on each other. Springs are resting on the keys - not the hubs. The key springs were heavy. Countergear end play was about .010",

Is this normal?

thx
Brian

Hey Allcoupedup,

Lookin' purty!!!! I've been wondering about your rebuild tranny project. Looks like you're at the end of the road on her. Doing this yourself has got to be gratifying.

Again, she does look brand new!

All new gears with new brass, it's tight. If you are trying to move the clutches by hand, don't waste your time.

It should free up and be fine by the time you have 50 miles on it.

Muncieman - if I put a small crescent wrench onthe shafts it is still difficult. Most of the time I have to rotate the input slightly to get it to move into gear - moving back ou tof gear is not difficult. Still sound normal?

6T5Rush - thanks man... yeah this was a great little project. Lots of little pieces to make you feel like you're really making progress as it is assembled. Can't wait to drive the car with the much lower first gear (2.56:1 vs. 2.2:1). I would definately recommend a muncie rebuild to anyone with some time, basic mechanical abilities, good organization, and some patience. Once I sell my current M21 and assuming I can get like $100 for my old gears, this project should end up costing me ~$500 net. Not bad for a fresh tranny with all new gears... but not that great considering the time I put into it. The education was well worth the extra $$$.

The case was bead blasted and looks brand new but It is now all dirty from my grubby hands. I'll post some pics of the finished project.

New gears and new rings always stick. Don't try and force it. Let it idle for a good 10 minutes and you'll be good to go. I've noticed you used the Taiwanese gears and Indian sliders. These gears look absolutely beautiful, but in the past the slider shift key slots on some slider batches were not exactly correct.

Please let us know how it works out for you publically. I happen to think these gears are nice and it would be great to hear some positive feedback.
