Chuck;
It's a 7747/TBI based system. Very basic, manual trans etc. No elec fans, just the engine stuff. Stock 400sb 107-117 cam. Can you direct me to a site that shows your thumbwheel chip? Sounds like a great thing. Might as well read up on that. Can explain to me aquiring data "off the board"?

Frank,

Heres a web site on blank thumbwheels:

https://www.casperselectronics.com/M...de=8687GN_Perf

It's 5th from the bottom. The thumbwheels are simple, basically they have a 10256 chip piggy backed on top and wired in to a 2732a chip in a carrier. As you go through the selector it picks 8 different parts of memory on the bigger chip. When you burn the bigger chip you select the 8 different sectors 000ff-001ff, 001ff-002ff, and so on. As electronics go this site has a forum to ask questions on electronics, these guys know everything about chips, wiring, and adapters for car electronics.

I would email tuner cat and ask which program you need for your setup. What will be nice with the thumbwheel you can start with a chip that has different fuel curves and different timing maps to see which actually performs best(track or dyno- true preformance). Once you pick your best fuel and timing setups then erase the chip and burn you valet, mileage, theft, and perfromance setting.

If you experimenting with the v-6 program there is alot of tables you won't use but something to consider later with other combos. Example if running an automatic you can adjust lockup (better mileage) at what mph and what load. In new versions like the ls1 you can adjust shifting point on auto trans., fuel curve for each side of injectors since it runs 2 O2 (1 for each side). Also on the new engines you don't use chips, they have their own memory (basically a hard drive) that you just reprogram.

Another site to check out is:

http://www.chuengineering.com/

This is the scan tool I use for the Buicks, you can download it free also and has good info on what your looking at.

Tps reading- need to check at idle and WOT(wide open throttle) proper readings for v-6 is idle .42 to .46 and wot is over 4.5 but not more the 5.0

BLM table (base learning mode) this will let you know how your injector rate is off. Ideal reading is 128 (prefect) but we don't live in a perfect world so anything 5 above or below is good. Number higher is lean and low is rich. readings are in a table of 4x4. As the rpm goes higher it will move to the box to the right, as the load increases it will move to the bottom box. So if your were taking of from the line at a race track the blms would move diag., with the bottom right box being WOT. If most of your number are say 150-160 you would need to decrease your injector rate. That way the computer would think it is a smaller injector and would give more gas (150-160 is lean) and vice versa. I have seen injector that are call 50lbs and we need to set at 48. Once we flowed the injectors they truely flowed close to 48. So if you buy injectors it is nice to make sure they are cleaned and flowed and ask for the number that way you can set your injector rate at that setting and save you time set you fuel curve.

Gives error codes and what they mean.

Sorry for the long post but there is some much more I have not covered. It took me about 5 months talking with others probably 3 nights a week to burn a chip that was better then an aftermarket chip. Now I have been doing it for 4 years and still have much to learn. I am learning how to edit the maf tables and fast update codes which lets you use the aldl port through two pins so it will update twice as fast.

As for off the board, most ecm's had an access port on the board that the company that produced them use to check them. On the Direct Scan site it explains how to access it and how to clean it. They coated the port after they were tested.

Basically you bend the end plate back n forth till it breaks along the crease (after you remove the 2 screws that are on the end). Then you will have access to the port. You use finger nail polish remover on the coating to soften it up and use a knife to scrap the coating off. Again be GENTLE when scraping so you don't ruin the contacts. Direct Scan sells the cable that slide on the ecm port and connects to the lap top printer port. Your aldl port downloads at 1-2 frames per sec and the direct port at 18 frames per sec. You would think that 1-2 is pretty fast but when the computer is monitor at thousands per sec., 1-2 is not. When making adjustment to timing and fuel the computer is adjust so fast that you see thing in the 18 frames per sec that you don't at a slower rate. Your watching O2 reading, knock, % of knock, Maf count, Iac, tps readings, and others.

Chuck,
Don't apologise for the long post, I'm listen'in.
Caspers has a VSS as well. In your opinion, should I to use one? Manual trans.
I'm gonna spend some time going thru those sites.
Thanks, Frank.

I have a Bocsh inline pump that pushes 100psi and a head of 18 feet. It should do whatever you need.

I'm not sure you need the vss with your setup. Caspers would be the ones the get a definite answer. Also ask which vss sender you need? There is different senders that give a different signals. Depend on your computer it uses that signal to lock or unlock torque conveter, formulate the load which effects the timing map. But I would email or post a question on caspers forum. I purchase my wiring harness from them, complete with vss sensor, vss converter, dual fan wiring, extra grounds, hot wired fuel pumps direct to alt., and each wire labeled so even I could understand.

Walbro 340 pump is an excellent pump and good to around 600 hp. I plan on using two walbro 340's with the second activated by boost pressure (around 12lbs).
