Default Anyone do any custom hood insulation work?..

A coworker and I were talking about hood insulation on our cars. He has a 78 that's being restored and I have my 73, which is lacking hood insulation. He wanted to know if anyone has done any custom work under the hood as far as insulation goes. I went to a vette show last august in Mackinaw City, MI and saw a number of c5's with leather or other materials covering there insulation and then they even had logos of some type in the material. They all looked very clean and nice. We would also like to go with something nicer under the hood. Has anyone done this themselves or know of someone out there that does this type of work?

Curious as well how those who did their own custom insulation work attached it to the hood.

Hello, I have a 73 and went with the stock hood insulation. I used the hood retainers, which look like large round washers to hold the insulation onto the rods that are embedded in the hood. If you go with some other type of material, you might be able to have these chromed, painted or powder coated to install your material.
You can see the connections in the before and after photos.

Did someone say they made there own insulation? What type of material did you use, and where did you get it. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

There is a woman named Paula who does these for C5s.She is a forum sponsor. I emailed her about doing a C3 hood. She replayed that she thought she had done that but never got back to me. If more C3 owners show intrest maybe she might.

I'm curious what other ways are used to attached the lining to the hood... instead of the round clips. Adhesive?

You could probably use an adhesive. I have hood insulation, but it is ugly. So the wife and I are going to try to cover it in Vinyl. Her mom works at an Embroidery shop so we'll have the crossed flags and "stingray" stitched in the center. I'll just use spray adhesive as a first try to get the vinyl to stick to the insulation. I'll make vinyl big enough to wrap around the ends of teh insulation and then re-install the insulation. I'll post when I get it done.

How did you get the leopard print to stick on there?

I used high temp spray adhesive and I bought it from Jeg's. You need to spray both the hood and the insulation.

There is a Forum member that has yellow and black splatter paint on the hood and firewalls. It looks really good. I am searching for that thread. It is a pretty neat looking concept.
