Default Fuel consumption / Safety

Hi folks,

after driving a 1995 convertible for 4 years I had to sell my Vette a couple of years ago due to "family" reasons.

However, my wife is now so happy with her new car that she stopped insisting on a 4-passenger car for me, so I am looking for a 2-seater again.

Obviously a Corvette is high on my wishlist.

I always liked the late C4s, the C5 seem to be a bit too bulbous for my eye and a C6 - well it is too expensive - almost 80.000 $ here in Europe!

And I always fancied the early C3´s with the chrome bumpers.

So here are my questions:

Can I use a 68 to 72 Vette as a daily driver? What to I have to expect with regard to fuel consumption? (we are at 6 $ a gallon in Germany).

Is it possible to ad at least modern safety belts? Are there any other safety upgrades available?

Thanks for your replies.

Chris

Gas milage isn't great, probably ~13-15MPG city, ~16-17MPG highway on average for small blocks and ~8-9MPG city, ~9-11MPG highway for big blocks (I don't know off hand how to convert to liters, and that's my guesstimate for the '69 model year--I expect later chrome bumpers did slightly better). The original belts are perfectly safe and functional, but you can buy replacement "modern" belts--many members of the forum have installed rear seat belts from late model Camaros or Firebirds (including me--they fit great, work fine).
