You need to do a thorough inspection of the car and look for evidence of damage, repairs, etc. My bet is that the front clip was replaced at some point with a 70-72 style, and the cast metal grilles are missing from the fender vents.
Email the pics to me at sburgess@employees.org and I'll post them for you.

Alright guys, here are the pics. In my opinion, the car has a '68 VIN and drivers side dash, but a later year passenger dash with the map pocket. The rear looks to be a '68 but the front is a weird hybrid with '73 style fender vents and a 70-72 front bumper and nose. Looks like the front fender and the rear portion behind the wheelwell were grafted together above the front wheel on the passenger front fender. It would be interesting to know what the inside of that wheelwell looks like. Is there a seam at the top of the wheel arch where the two panels join together?
Any other ideas?

In teh pics, looks like teh rear wheelwells were "modified" to match teh front "flares" BEHIND teh tire. Also, those ARE NOT '68 doors, they are '69-'82 style doors.

I hope this wasn't your late fathers car or some sad story like that. I would dump this one, it's way to far gone for me. There are to many nice 68's you can buy and not have that much work. This would make a good custom or race car. Good luck.

If the frame looks anything like the body on that car then you are looking a a very big moneypit. Find another 68 that is driveable and has a solid frame. Use this one for parts.

Oy, that's a real puzzle. Not much left there that's unique to '68. Does the driver door match the passenger? I suspect it was hit on the passenger side and the entire front of the car was replaced with donor parts form a rear-hit. I still don't understand the '73 fender vent on what sounds to be a '70 fender...

Allen,
there aint no telling what it really is without looking at it in person. it does have a 1968 guage cluster. Hey, if you have to desire and time and money to fix it go for it. like others have stated I would for sure go custom with it, they are a ton of cool tastefull things you can do to it to make it nice. It may even be a life long journey but as long as you have fun, thats what matters

Front clip has been replaced. Doors are not '68; '69 or later; lower front fenders are '73 and later; upper fenders are '69 and later ('68s have no fender scripts and no holes for mounting them); hood is '73 and later.
Dash is '68 with ignition in dash; center cluster is 3 piece, non-AC '68.
Rear panels are correct '68.

The exhaust closeout panel (below rear bumpers) is correct for '68. I can't see the rear corners in the picture well enough to tell what shape the clearance lights are on yours. The pictures I posted above are of a no-hit '68 body, so you can compare to those.
