I thought I would give Rub 'n Buff a try on my rear backing plate. Started by cleaning the backing plate with a wire brush to remove the heavy gunk. I followed this up with POR-15 Marine Clean to degrease it. Then I started applying the Grecian Gold Rub 'n Buff I picked up at Michael's.

Do you think I should give it a coat of clear for extra protection and seal in the color?
I have it in the garage--I'll go look when my back recovers--I pulled out my back putting in the new late-C3 seat cushions. They just "clip in". Yeah. This is the first time working on the 'vette has about put me into traction.

Every time I clear coat something it comes out looking like crap, the clear coat is not uniform, has a kinda "orange peel" look, it is the same whether I go over a freshly painted surfec or polished aluminum. I have tried 3 or 4 different kinds of clear coat and get the same effect, even tried stuff specifically for aluminum wheels, sprayed ot over the aluminum and the aluminum looks terrible when it drys, I end up sanding it off, what gives ?
