Default New stall installed, WHOOOOOAAAAAAH!!!

Got ithe 2200 stall in today and regapped the plugs (was popping before). All I can say is WOW! This, short of the heads and cam, is the best performance upgrade to date. Before, I couldn't burn the tires even if power braking (would pull through the brakes). I couldn't really launch at the track. Now I can shred the tires. Can't wait to see what she'll do in the quarter now! If it doesn't rain, I'll go tommorrow and post my results. From what it feels like launching, I think I might just do a 12.7 or even better. Oh what a feeling.

Nice!
I regret not buying a higher stall converter for mine when I bought my tranny. Live and learn.

Yeah, but I can't imagine going too much higher.

When I first built my stroker, I had the trans done at the same time. But I yanked it back out after about 500 miles on the motor, to install a 2500 stall convertor.

I couldn't stand having my new motor not be able to launch the car!

How adversly does a higher stall converter affect fuel consumption? I must admit, having driven (and worked on) stick in most my cars the torque converter is still somewhat of a mythical being to me.

What converter would you suggest for a 'spiritedly' street driven SB vette?

And would converter choice change if I was also swapping in a 700R4 tranny?

Thanks,

cosmicvette

T/C acts like a clutch, when you hit the gas it allows the eng to rev near the T/C's stall speed rating (depending on the eng the stall speed may be diff when the same t/c attached to diff eng's- generally more torq means the t/c will stall at a lower speed). Having a higher stall allows the eng to get higher in its torq band before the cars starts to move, almost like dropping the clutch at the stall speed. The harder you hit the gas the closer it will be to the stall speed when it engages. Higher stall will lower gas mileage and also produce more heat in city driving.

You should base the stall speed selection on your eng power curve, trans gear and rear gear. Seems like 2500-3000 is a popular range for a spirited small block, I run a 2600 stall with a 700r4, 3.73 rear and 350 eng that has lots of midrange in my Formula. It roasts the tires with ease.

with my XE268 cam, 700r4, 3.08s i'm running a 2500 rpm stall, i also had originally put in too tight of a stall torque converter (1400 rpm) and took it out with in the first month

I'm running a 9" Billet, Vigilanti 3600 lockup stall in mine and I love it. It doesn't feel sloppy at all and lockup is perfect for street driving. It was matched for the car though. Had to give them weight, gears, tire size, cam, displacement, compression, carb size, and nitrous shot. Took them 2 weeks to build it and send it to me. I really liked the customer service and would reccomend them.

Either the 72 came with a higher stall or they are not rated the same way. Recently, with the posts on how huge a difference a 2200rpm to 2500rpm is making; I don't think the original one GM installed are rated in the same manner.
Is the 2110 that you are reffering to the stall speed or is that a part number? It seems odd that they did not call it a 2100.

EJ82:
what does it cost for a 'good' quality 700R4 converter, as you described above?

Don't have ANY knowledge of the A/OD transmissions or converters, and am considering one for the Cross-Fire.

Thanks in advance, GLEN!!!

GM engineering specs call for 2110 for 72
my tach says 2100

i like it very much....the idle is bit rough at 800 rpm though...the usable powerband combined with the 700r4 is really impressive, it just wants to go.....

Your running 3.08 rear end gears, bobs77vet. I don't get to many people that are. I'm also running that and it sure doesn't help me in the 1/4, engine has to do most of the work.

yeah no question about that .....but i spend more time on the high way then i do on the 1/4 mile track and 65mph at 1700 rpm is really sweet....and with the really steep first gear it plays right into my hand with the 3.08s....i think this is agood combination...only issue is when 4th drops down to 38mph and you have lockup at 1100rpm.....3.55 or something would probably help in this situation to boost the rpm but i'm still playing with the TV cablecam on this one....
