Default First time Vette owner, new to board....

Hi! I'm new to the Corvette world....... I just got my first one yesterday. It's a '69 Cortez Silver coupe, 350/300, 4-speed, black leather interior. I've wanted a Vette for years, and finally decided to jump into one before prices for a C3 go higher than I could have afforded.

A friend of mine referred me to this board and said it was a nice place and very informative.

I haven't hardly had the car 24 hours, and I'm all ready see things that I want to change or simply fix/figure out. Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm not sure if this or the Tech/Perf forum is the best place for my questiosn, so here goes.......

First and foremost, how hard is it to change a steering column?

I don't have a tilt/tele column and definately need one (over 6'3", knees in the steering wheel whenever I work the clutch).

Second, is there a way to fix/tighten a luggage rack screw that doesn't seem to grab onto anything and keeps spinning? I don't know if it's stripped out something or what the situation is.

Third, Is it worth it and very difficult to convert to power brakes?

Thanks again for any help. I'm looking forward to reading on here, searching the archives, learning anything I can, and simply enjoying the ride.

Here you go...

But I would try a smaller diameter steering wheel first...alot cheaper!

True..... but I kinda like the factory steering wheel, and would prefer to keep it looking original. Retrofitting a factory column in is my preference, providing it isn't too difficult.

However, wow! $700 for a column... oh boy, I guess I'll be waiting for a little bit to afford that on top of just getting the car. Whew!

Hi and welcome. I was reading your thread and later on I found a thread in the C3 tech/performace about steering column removal and thought about your question. Maybe this can help you.

Here is the thread http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...073&forum_id=3

If that does not work search (steering column removal procedure) that is the title of the thread.

Nice picture of the Vette. Good luck with your project(s) and glad to have you aboard.

Default New Guy

Now thats just a sinfull over use of "Argent silver"....an inside joke, the old guys will get it. Just kidding though...
Welcome to the group......we got some helpers and we got some disrupters.................Like Me!...
Hey, nothing wrong with replacing that steering wheel with a later model 14" wheel, it looks factory and you can get the leather cover redone to be perfect! I just happen to have one for sale on eBay right now....plug, ..plug...eBay
I'm 6'4" and 230lbs and wouldn't fit without my trusty 14 inch wheel.
"Welcome to the Camp"............"I guess we all know why we're here."

Welcome to the world of "early sharks". I've owned 7 of them.

Try to make the Bloomington Gold or Corvettes at Carlisle meets, the biggest, best two all Corvette meets in the US. Once bitten, you'll never want to not go to them!
