Default Synthetic Oil Question

What are the pros and cons of going to synthetic oil in a 77 Vette SB after several thousand miles of organic (normal) oil use?

hmmmm the age old argument of synthetic vs regular oil.

If I have ever rebuilt an engine even if it is just a change of bearings and seals then I switch to synthetic and I have never had any problems.

Some people have said they switched to synthetic after running regular oil for years and they have leaking problems, others say they don't.

At the end of the day regular oil has come a long way over the years and even 'regular' oil is far superior to the stuff these engines were originally using.

If it has been quite a few thousand miles since your engine was last rebuilt or overhauled then I would suggest just using a blended regular/synthetic oil.

only drawback are leaks if the seals/gaskets are marginal....if they are not, then there are no drawbacks.

If the engine was taken care of you will have no problem switching to synthetics. Synthetics will outperform dinos just about every time.

Syn reacts to high heat alot better and flows better in the cold. Less impurities.

I use it in my DD Honda that only holds 3.5 quarts. It would be too expensive to go for in the Vette. Maybe after an expensive rebuild.

Sythetic's do not change thickness so they provide better lubrication quicker. They are less prone to temperature. If you switch and have leaks or smoke switch back but for the money I think they are worth it. My $0.02

Try 9 qts. of Royal Purple in a BB boat! $60 every time I change the oil (not including filter)

FWIW - All the boat engine builders I've spoke with use synthetics.

Only problem with trying synthetic and then switching back if it leaks is that once the leaks start they will continue even if you switch back to regular oil.

I bought a 383 crate engine and was told by the builder (engine factory) if I use synthetic I void my warranty. I don't know why but they don't want it in there!

For the first time in years, I have a chevy engine without leaking oil on dino oil. Don't think I want to risk leaks just to try synthetic oil.

Switched to synthetic after 10000 miles on regular oil on my old engine. Had no issues at all, but I was told not to switch back to regular oil because it could cause problems.

I know that one of the engines I had rebuilt, the builder recommended using regular oil to run it in and synthetic was fine after the run in period.

I recently changed to synthetic 10w-30 in my 140 thou mile engine a few months ago. since I had previously used 10w-40 dino, I thought that I may develope a leak, but none sofar. What I like best, is that the common internal noises made by a 140,000 mile engine are not as noisey as they once were. Don't ask me to explain it, but now I do feel safer knowing that my engine is quiter and better protected. Hershey
