Does anyone have photo's of the 'birdcage' I am intrigued to see what they look like.
Are they a structural component tied into the chassis/suspension or do they just supply strength/structure to the fibreglass body?
cosmicvette
It provides a "backbone" for the fibreglass. It doesn't too nearly enough to make the chassis rigid. With flexible body mounts it would do even less. The coupes are noticeably more rigid then a Vert.
Only way to make the chassis/suspension more rigid is to weld in a roll bar and make the frame a "3D" structure vice the "2D" the frame currently is.
So does anyone know the years that trade-out or can you point me to a source that may.
I have been told that the 68-77 will interchange but I want to make sure before I start shopping. As if it actually extends to '82 that is better me, if it does stop at 77 that is still good for me, if it stops at 73 or something then that is bad for me.
There was a change in the 78 model due to the different dash. Its just the piece at the base of the windshield. Drilling a few spot welds and welding on the old part wouldn't be much work.
Teebone. What are you going to do with the VIN? Are you using the title for the New bird cage's VIN or are you going use your OLD/current VIN and title????
the birdcage is nothing like a rollcage, it isn't even as " structural" as you may think, basically it holds the doors in place and the windshield up. The crash protection is poor, the cage consists of stamped sections spot welded together. The majority of the car's stiffness comes from the ladder frame and since ladder frames have poor torsional stabilit and like to twist our cars do that also. I would not want to roll my car, if you rolled it hard and walked away from it you're pretty lucky, the rolling must have kept the entire weight of the car from being excerted on the cage, if you would take a vette, turn it upside down and drop it I'm willing to bet a fair amount of beer that the entire top will be flat. I saw one vette that rolled into a ditch and the portion above the door handles was next to non existent, completely flattened.
