Default side exhaust insulators?

ok probably a stupid question...but need your help on it anyway!

When people talk about side exhaust (factory 69) what are the insulators? and where can you get them?

Ive just bought some factory side exhaust covers (need rechroming, not in great condition) and it didn't include the 'insulators'...and now after buying them I have tried to find out what these insulators are...and I hope I am mistaken..but they look expensive! Can you do without?

My boyfriend is going to kill me! (he gave me an upper limit but I went past it!)

Thanks guys!

Is this it because I'm not 100% sure myself. Maybe someone with side exhaust can verify.

Oh well I tried. You could check out places like CorvetteCentral, MidAmerica Motorworks to see if they have it. Good luck

You need the insulators for a number of reasons. 1st: They hold the 3 chrome pieces together. 2nd: They act as a heat barrier from the exhaust pipe. 3rd: They make the covers strong.

There is no getting around it. You need the insulators.

Also to get the chrome pieces rechromed it cost around $1200. Thats if they don't need any work.

Paragon sells reproduction insulators for $1150.00 a pair. You can get a new set of reproduction covers with the insulator and chrome for $2200.00 for the pair.

That is why you see people selling the covers and not replating them. It's cheaper to get a new set.

Sorry to give you some bad news.

That is a total bummer...I can't get back to sleep now!! (different time zone over here).
Im not looking forward to telling my boyfriend the news when he wakes up.

I thought it was to good to be true!! and what makes it worse is the covers are in the US and im in Australia. Im definitly thinking of selling them (I dont care if I don't make all my money back...just some will do!).

I find it difficult to understand why the reproduction covers and insulators sell for so much...you would think someone could reproduce them at a cheaper price to give the other companies some competition.

Wouldn't I be able to get someone to fabricate/make up something that does the 3 jobs you mentioned the insulators do? ("1.hold 3 pieces together, 2.act as heat barrier, 3.make covers strong")

If my wife told me she bought a set of side exhaust covers but no insulators, I would give her a big wet kiss. At least she thought enough to buy them. But that's me. We should all be as lucky.

Nothing about the side exhaust covers is cheap. I've seen some real junk on ebay selling for $6-700. I can't believe how well the insulators work though. Great design. Even after a long run, the outer chrome piece is still cool enough to hand touch...unbelievable.

I bought mine used with insulators and they're not in the best of shape. I have one fiberglas insulator slip but that was easily fixed with a fiberglass patch.

Jughead: My boyfriend is pretty cool about it...now...after he had some time to cool off!

I don't even have the car yet and already getting side exhaust for it..thats why he is a little upset at me!

Im thinking of quitting before I get further behind...what I mean is just selling the covers and not bothering with getting what I need to complete the setup. Damn!

However, Im thinking of fabricating something (well getting my boyfriend to!), does anyone have any photos of the insulators?
(are they plated in gold?!)

stay cool dudes
