Default Hardtop Hoist

Whats the best hardtop hoist out there for a 68 and does anyone know if these are safe to store the hardtop hanging or are they just for removal and putting the top back on. Also what about hardtop covers, who makes the best ones.

Thanks again guys
Chris

Chris,

My boss just made one for his Chrysler. Go to Harbor Freight and buy an electric winch for around $50. Get some seatblet webbing (tie down straps) and make up lifting strops.

He bolted his winch to his rafters and it works great.

I personally would rig up some boards to move under the top once it is suspended. He just leaves it swinging in the strops under the winch.

I got a hoist from one of the Catalogs for 30 Bucks, I would'nt store the top there at all? it just makes it a one person job as far as Im concerened. I even ran a bolt through a 2X4 and used ,more bolts to fasten it to the ceiling joists. I dont want to take any chances that something might fail?but the one I got does do the job very good. Id never try to remove the top alone without one

I spent a bit more money, but did about the same thing..

I used a Harbor Freight hoist from Ebay. It was new but much cheaper than Harbor freight. (I hope it wasn't stolen) I went to the store to buy it and the in-store price is much higher! They told me that if I had printed out the web price they could match it. But I didn't have it and I had driven 45 minutes to get there. So I left angry and empty handed. I'm glad I found it on Ebay

I did need to extend the remote control cable.

I wasn't sure how to make the harness, but then I saw in an Ecklers catalog that they sell just the harness.

I didn't trust it completely so I used 2 nylon tie down straps in addition.

I just let it dangle above my head, my fingers are crossed!

It only takes about 10 minutes to completely remove or replace the top by myself.

The hoist I got was rated for a lot more weight. Like 800 pounds or so. I'll try to post some pictures tonight.

A Hoist? What's wrong with your muscles? When I used to take the hard top on and off, I got a second hand of hands, the times the second hand of hands were not available, I did it all by myself...sure it's bulky, but not impossible to handle by oneself and no damage to the chome or the hardtop

Nothing wrong with good ol fashion muscle . . . I was actually more interested in if they were trustworthy enough to store that way.

Don't know if I would leave suspended just on the hoist....reminds me...a friend had a muncie in the overhead of an old garage. We moved his race car out one day,and that muncie fell to the floor....about where his engine would have been....

Hi, @Mike67nv--

I found the hoist--48303, and the straps--Loop Straps w/ 1 inch chrome Ratchet Buckle & Polyester Webbing. Hard to tell how long the straps are from your pics. Can you please provide that length as I have to follow the same path for mine.

Cheers,

RIchard
