Default Stereo question

We are looking onto putting a stereo into her Vette ('68.) This would include installing maybe 6x9's in a box in the back. She wants it to be loud enuff the hear with the top down going down the highway, but no earth shattering decibels. My qustion is with the top down and tucked away will it (the top) block alot of the sound? Any done this?

With the top down at highway speeds the sound will be poor. Add speakers in the kick panels or door(don't like cutting up a door!). A friend has special kick panels designed to hold 6" speakers and turn slightly out and up at the passengers. He has side pipes and a BB and this works well for driving.

I put JBL 6x9" in stand alone speakers boxes in the rear deck, and 5 1/4" JBLs behind the kick panels. Powered by an Alpine amplifier between the two rear speakers. The sound is plenty loud, even with the T-top off at highway speed. The sound quality, however, is so-so. I believe that the rear compartment is not an ideal sound enclosure regardless of the quality of the components. The basic acoustics are poor. But then again, I'm probably spoiled by the sound system in my regular modern day car.

Metal Wulf would know. He sent me plans for boxes for our 74 coupe. Maybe one day we'll get to install everything.

Sorry, with the top down, it muffles the 6 X 9s. I have 2 6 X 9s, 3 8" subwoofers in the back, with a pretty big amp (in my 68 vert). The 2 4 X 6 kick panel speakers help somewhat. I also added 2 2" surface monted tweeter to the top of the dash pad in the corners. The 68s didnt have dash speakers, they were added in 69, I think. They really help. In addition I built a box that sits on the back of the armrest, and contours to the seats. This has 2 4" speakers that point forward. They also put out a lot of sound.
I would suggest a subwoofer, better 4 X 6s in the kick panels and a couple dash speakers/tweeters. Then add from there if that's not enough. Mine has sidepipes too, so I really needed it to be loud to hear it.
