I need to install a complete exhaust system on my '74 LS-4. I've already installed a set of used Hooker SuperComps and have a set of pipes from the collectors back to the factory pipe connection in front of the crossmember. I'm getting to be an old man and while I enjoy a good rumble in the exhaust as much as anyone, I don't care for an objectionable sound level (straight through Magnaflows, chambered pipes etc). Many have indicated that the Dynomax Super Turbos have a great compromise between noise level and performance, without some of the drone the Magnaflows have.
My question is this: are people using universal Dynomax Super Turbos or is their a part number that directly fits the C3 without monkeying around? Either way, what part numbers has everyone been using and where did you buy the mufflers from? Also, since I only need the rear section of pipe, and I better off buying this from a distributor or simply finding a local bend it up shop that can do the job. The bendy guys I know around here seem more focused on cheap than doing the job right. I don't want to be dealing with rattles, scraping the ground, etc. Recommendations?
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
I bought the 3 inch Dynomax Super Turbos from Jegs for 65 bucks each these are a universl fit but they sure are pretty big, I guess they have to be pretty big because they have a 3 inch internal tube, some of the other 3 inch SuperTurbos have 2.5 inch internal tubes, lucky I found that out, just check the dimensions you should find one that fits

Have you looked into the Hooker aero chamber mufflers? I hear they flow pretty well and sound pretty good.
That's what I'm planning on using on my 72 when I do the exhaust.
Go with the Borla 2.5 inch, you will really like the sound. Nice deep rumble at idle, and at WOT they put out a low but mean sound...
So far I haven't had any resonance.

Desrtdawg, that's what I'm after! Did you find a specific part number that fit the confines under the back or was it a universal fit muffler? Did it fit factory pipes or did you have a local shop bend up the pipes to work? Where did you order the mufflers from? I went out to Borla's site (no online catalog) and punched my zip code into their locator and a company called Crutchfield (big catalog distributor of electonics with a local store front) came up. They do electronics, not exhaust systems. I need to get something under this machine so that I can run it without rattling every window in the neighborhood and making alll of the babies cry. Thanks for you help!
I can't help with P/N or fit because I have run them on a non Corvette, but I can only confirm that the Dynomax Super Turbos are the perfect balance between performance sound and plain too much noise!
Steve,
Here is a link to Jegs with the stainless steel ones like I have. Jegs Link!!!
The ones that fit in the place of the stock mufflers were part number 157-40653.
You will have to modify the Y pipe to connect to these, but they fit almost perfectly in the stock location.
I'm pretty happy with the plain-jane turbo mufflers from Corvette Central on my LS4. They also offer the pipe in sections, so you can get just the piece from the cross-member to the muffler.
Thanks guys! That's the detailed information that I was looking for. Now I just need to get the rear suspension back under the car so that I can install some exhaust.
Hey Guy, that's a great write up you have going in Corvette Fever (I think, too many mags coming to the house). I can't tell you how disappointed I was when your '74 was hit (can't even begin to know how you felt). I'm glad that you're fixing it, and more glad that you're sharing the rebuild with all of us. Whether you're writing all of it or someone is helping you, the pics and information being shared is great. I know that you're looking forward to getting it back on the road again. Congratulaions.
