I have been looking into purchasing a 1976 stingray coupe from guy who lives next to one of my friends. I have looked around it and inside, but haven't seen under the hood or very much underneath it yet. Right off the bat i can tell it needs floor pans and the guy mentioned body mounts. What sorts of things should i look for on and in the car to see if it is worth my time, money and effort. I don't mind putting work into it, since that is one of the only ways i could afford the car in the first place. He is asking for 2,500$
PS: ive looked around and have only found one site with the floor pans and they run for 289$ for each side.. does anyone know where i can get them cheaper if i decide to get this car?

If the floor pans are bad, I would make sure the frame is intact. Sounds like it could be a money pit. Is there a Corvette specialist near by that could go through it for you?
maybe not a specialist but my boss owns a vett and a few other cars (mustang etc.) and he has done all the work needed on those for the length of time he has had them, i could probably have him come by and check it out with me.. i looked at the frame from what i could see and it looked decent i didn't find any rust, but once again i couldnt get under it to look so until then im not positive on the frames condition.
ps.. i can see the ground throught the floor pan on the drivers side..
First, drive it.
If it does not pass that test stop.
If it does, get it on a hoist. Don't just look, take a screw driver or awl and look hard for weak spots. Pay attention to ares that rise in front of the rear wheels, the seam in the front cross member and the area aroung the windshield. Surface rust is not an issue, You are looking for weak spots.
Wnen you say body mounts, do mean just the rubber bushings or do you mean the mounting points are rusted out? If it's that bad, stay away from it.
When you said it needs a floor pan, I got the impression that this is a full restoration, which would not be the cheepest way into the hobby.
Have your boss help you make a list of what it needs to be road worthy and post the list. (pictures would be nice) The forum guys will tell you how much it will cost you.
