Default Distributor Identification

If the band is missing around the base of the Distributor--are there any other ways to tell what it is??

I don't understand what "band" you are referring to. The distributer number is stamped on there. Or do you mean the stamping is rubbed/ground off?

EDIT: spoke too soon. Im thinking HEI, not sure about the points-type.

There is a small aluminum band that goes around the dist. It is about the size of a bread tie. Most of them are history. No way to tell what you have without it. My advice is to take it to a dist machine and have it setup correctly. If it is original it has a lousy advance curve nad needs rebuilding anyway.
