I saw a hurst competition plus model 2083 for sale used. They said it came out of a 69 vette, but it had a curved shifter handle. I am in the market for a shifter and wanted to know if theis was if fact the correct shifter for a c-3. It is going into a 78 model with a BW 4 speed.
Some will have the curved handle and some will not. The two I have purchased in the past 30 years were straight handled. But I have seen Corvettes with the curved one as well.
Keep in mind that the handles on these will unbolt so you can change them if you wish. In fact many forum venders sell the stock looking reproduction handle that bolts right up to the Hurst. This is like having your cake and eating it too...
It's a great addition to any C2-C3 Corvette and I wouldn't ever go back... well maybe if it was an all original, matching-numbers L-88, with... you get the picture...

They also had a muncie mounting plate.
What do you think?
Go to Hurst web site. They say a Comp + shifter for a '78 is 3917992 and the install kit is 37338611. I have this set up in my '76. Hurst handle is curved, I bought an aftermarket straight handle for the original look. Straight handle is EXPENSIVE +/- $90. BTW, a search on the Hurst web site does not come up with a #2083.
I couldn't find the model number but I just installed a hurst competition plus shifter in my 76....It does have a curved shifter arm....nice upgrade..
I have a 76 4 speed also. How did you get the old shifter out to install the Hurst shifter? I've worked on my linkage some and it looks almost impossible to remove the shifter with the left side exhaust pipe running through the transmission cross member. Does the Hurst shifter mount to the transmission tail shaft or to the cross member?

Tail shaft. Not that big of a job. Go to the Hurst web site and read the installation manual.
I did mine last spring and it was not all that difficult and I am running 2 1/2 inch exhaust. I did not even push my transmission over. Two people are a big help. One in the car and one below. Good luck

Well I just happened to have the interior stripped out at the same time and was also doing some floorboard work.....so I had a section of the tunnel cut out for easy access... As mentioned before 2 people make the job much easier......remove the linkage from the shifter from underneath, remove the center console (as much as neccesary), I believe there are 3 bolts that hold the shifter and mounting plate to the trans, these are the hardest to get to, might have to move your e-brake bracket to get to the back one....other than that its not to bad....good luck..
The Hurst Comp + 4-speed shifter in my 69 had a straight 10 1/4 inch stick. I bought a straight 8 inch off ebay with good chrome for $30 + shipping to go on my Kessler 5-speed. I never saw a curved shifter on a Vette but that doesn't mean one won't work.
