well,
i am putting on my weatherstripping on my ttops and the paint is lifting off of the top..... is this a sign that the painter didn't prime it? i am having issue with the quality of the paint job and about to blow up on my painter......
After reading all of the problems you have had with your painter I think you would be justified in giving him a good *** stomping. He missed spots and now the paint is lifiting on the T-tops? Beat him down if he wont give you a refund or redo the whole car till its right.
yeah, i hear that.... i owe hime 200 and he keeps calling me...finally today i told him again about the obviously missed spots and all the over spray on my engine/suspension that i had to clean and repaint...... his answer was..... well i had to spray the whole car, of course there would be overspray..... i was like, yo' there's a technique called masking and he didn't do it........ and on top of that, i took the car b4 the wet sand a nd i did it cause i was tired of waiting and he still thinks i owe him all in full........ then on top of that, the lady that is doing my interior...vynle wrappin my fiberglass, still isn't done.... 3 weeks so far for that and she told me 2-3 days...... it seems as if i should have really done everything myself on this car....... i'm really tired of idiots and am getting frustrated with it......... i just want to drive it now..... is that much to ask..... all the last details is what counts and so far the stuff i didn't do is really letting me down..i.e. paint/interior..... on top of that, i have been out of work for 3 weeks now and money is tooooo tight to even put gas in the tank....... life goes on i guess......
I know how you feel. You put in all kinds of blood sweat and tears getting everything right and get let down on the details. I hate having to rely on other people. Everyone says Im a control freak but I just know they wont do it right Id seriously try get my money back. At least some of it. If you took pics of the overspray and missed spots you should be able to sue him and win. Maybe get a lawyer to call him with a figure you expect back and see how it goes.
Good luck on getting back to work bud.
somtimes when a painter paints out of his "WINDOWS" the layers of sealer/ paint /clearcoat does not adhear to each other.for exp.- if a painter sprays the sealer down he has a certain time before he can spay the basecoat over it,but if he sprayed the sealer down and doesnt spray the basecoat down within the sealers window(could be one day or three days depends on what sealer)the basecoat will not stick to the sealer, thats why it is important to get product info sheets and use them like bibles!.Another way that can happen is mixing different manufacteurs products, for exp- I sprayed a car with house of kolors brandy wine basecoat, then sprayed ppg 2021 clearcoat over it using ppg solvent, the solvent wasnt as strong as house of kolors solvents and the clearcoat diddnt get enough bit into the basecoat, when I went to blow the jambs out later to clean them out the clealcoat was coming off in sheets, what a mess .when the paint peels does just the clearcoat come off?or does the basecoat peel with it?or does the sealer peeloff also?it could be a preping problem, before you even start to paint there should be a good "tooth"on the car, most people will block there primer up to 600 grit wet so the sealer will have somthing to stick to.If I were you I would find out what kind of paint he used(ppg, house of kolor, dupont, ect) go to where its sold, talk to the factory rep.,have him look at the paint,he will know where the painter or his product went wrong if it the paint itself he will make it right,if its the painters falt he will give you the documentation to go after the painter no matter who cut and buffed.that paint should not fall off your car!this is
so far i had the underside of the t-tops painted since i wasn't going to put the liners back on... that's where it was coming off...once i started to put on the weatherstrippin it was popping off.... i figure he didn't prep it right and/or use a primer. so far there are numerous items that have happened to my 2500 (paid 2300 so far) paint job.... sure, people say u get what u pay for but at least do it right.... i told him to charge me what he thought would be fair..... so when he said 2500 i said ok..... now i supposaly owe him 200 still and i talked to him yesterday about the other things (because i didn't realize the paint peeling till later) and he still thinks that he deserves the 200..... i'm about to let him have it with an ear full of issues..... normally i'm a good guy and don't let stuff get to me but when people do crappy jobs and expect to be paid in full and give excuses, that really pisses me off..... they always say that bad news travels faster than good news.....
i have pics in my gallery.. i'll try to get some better shots of the pearl when the sun is out...... and maybe some shots of the spots i have to touchup since he didn't paint them......
my windshield will be on tomorrow so i can finish the trim...just waiting on my interior..... that's another story....

ok, now that we know that, it don't sound so bad. There is going to be overspray on any paint job. Its just a matter of who cleans it up. Take a few days cool off then decide if you want to jump him. As far as sanding through the clear. You might want to rough it up with 400 and have him or someone add more coats.
Edit:
A lot of people use silicone on the weatherstrip to keep it plyable and new. Silicone keeps anything from sticking much less paint. The bottom of the t-tops fiberglass are very porous making it impossible to get it all the silicone out. He probably did the best he could.

i cleaned of the old junk but not only where the wstrippin is going but in other spots........ if i would have seen alot of this before i took the car i would have told him to redo it...but you know how that goes.... i might just give in and give up the 200 and forget about ever dealing with him again...... i hate to burn bridges ....... i'll have to sleep on it..... so, i have some parts to sell off.... anyone need some interior ducts and shifter plate...... and a pair of 2.5" half shafts...hehe
