Default crankshaft pulley

Whats the secret to removing the crankshaft pulley? I'm not really an engine guy so I dont want to screw anything up. Thanks

Also, I want to replace the pulleys with chrome or aluminum ones but I'm not sure about which ones to purchase. The reason is I thought I had a short water pump but when I look at whats available to replace them with it doesnt match whats on the car. I have a 2 groove water pump pulley and a 3 groove crankshaft pulley. I've been told on this forum that I have a short pump When I look at the kits for a short pump the grooves are 1 for water and 2 for crank Please help me out.

The engine is a small block l-48 with a few modifications.

Hmmmmm, Maybe I should clarify a bit. I understand that there are 3 small bolts to remove. There is also a center bolt. If I try to remove the center bolt it turns the entire crankshaft. This is the part that concerns me. How do I break the bolt loosesince the pulley turns when I try to do so?

I had a friend bring over an air compressor gun/air wrench, the type use on lug nuts at the service stations and it took the bolt right off. Also see Summitracing.com and look up MCH-5070 (March Performance Pulleys), sells for $213.95. I bought these for my 76. They have the three groove crank and two groove water pump pulleys. It also comes with the alternator pulley with cap. You may want to get the power pump pulley that matches the new ones - MCH-511 for $67.88.

Put a socket wrench on there and just give it a sharp tap with a hammer to break frre the nut that should do it. I just did mine this way, also try a little penetrating oil first just to give it some help.

in a manual transmisson put the car in gear and chock the wheels this will stop the crankshaft from rotating, or alternatively in an auto drop the fly wheel inspection plate and put a screw driver through one of the holes in the flex plate.
