I'm running 225/50/17's in the front and 275/50/17's in the rear, I originally had 245/50/17's in the front and they rubbed the control arm at full turn. I probable could have gotten by with 235's but didn't want to go through all the hassel of sending back another set of tires. Wheels are Intro twisted matrix, and tires are Nitto 450. Hope this helps.

I'm trying to fill the wheelwells as much as possible and my calculations indicate a 235/50-17 is slightly smaller than the 255/60-15.
This calculator is what I've been using:
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalcold.html
The calculator reveals your 275/50-17's are slightly larger than stock and will probably fit nicely at the rear.
P.S. - My car has been lowered, if this matters...

I cut the front spring and installed lowering (longer) bolts at the rear spring.

It looks like I'll end up with a larger tire in the rear. Can I go bigger than 255/50-17 or is that pushing it? Dimensionally speaking, it's the same size as I have now (255/60-15).

Wow! That's a damn beautiful car. Love the hoops...
When you say "cut the fenders", you're talking about the outer rear piece (it kinda juts out as an extension of the lower trim piece), right?

Thanks!
No, I had to cut the front of the fender lip. About 1/4" had to come off for a length of about 12" (from the bottom). It's not really noticable to anyone but a fanatic. When I get around to having the paint re-done (It's a 10-footer), I'll glass new returns on the lip where I had to remove the old.
Oh, they are Bridgestone Potenza RE-750 tires. They are real sticky and plenty quiet (they don't compete with the sidepipes, anyway).
