it took me a day to take mine completely apart and then another 2 days to put old guages on the new dash and put it all back together. it was a huge PITA
My 78 dash came out pretty easily. I haven't put one back in yet though. Just put lables or masking tape on all the wires so you can hook them all back up correctly.

It is not that hard at all. It goes in easier than it comes out. Unless someone has cut up the wiring in your dash, you shouldn't have to mark anything. All the harnesses are different from each other, so even if you have two items closes enough together to forget which wiring is for what, you can't hook them up wrong. The hardest part of removing the dash is not tearing the ears off the top corners when pulling it out.
I didn't drop the steering column as some have suggested, but I had my steering wheel removed when I took mine out.
The only thing I would be concerned with marking are the vacuum lines running to the heater controls.
Why are you wanting to take it out. If we know that, maybe we can tell you whether or not you should have someone else do it.
The dash has cracks (2) from the front to the back and are about 1/2 an inch deep. I still need to buy a replacement and so far the cheepest I found was on E-bay. They are brand new and cost $400.00 plus shipping. Best I could find for the money.
Mine came out pretty easy. If all you need to do is replace the top part, I think you can just take of the right section to give you access to the screw that holds it down. Don't quote me on that, though. Also, take out all the screws along the top of the front pieces.
