Default Drive shaft u-joints

I had pressed out the u-joints on my drive shaft and was preparing to put in the new grease-less u-joints and noticed immediately that the new ones are about 1/4 shorter than the original u-joints. The originals were grease-able u-joints, clearly with the grease zerk. I didn't think there was a length difference between the two types are there? Or did I get the wrong joints from Corvette Central? The box says they are greaseless drive shaft joints of the right model year vintage.

Ideas? This is for my '77 Vett

I spent some time looking at these this weekend.

I'll say up front that I'm no expert, but what you're describing doesnt sound right. With or without zerk shouldn't matter. The joints are held in place by expansion clips so they have to be the same distance from cap to cap. Otherwise they'll move back and forth.

1/4 inch sounds like an awfully big difference to me.

I too have used both kinds with no issues. Somehow, you have an incorrect U Joint.....

there is a smaller joint for pre 71 4speed. I found out when I changed the trans. Had a 71 driveshaft. Used the larger joint.

I actually had to use a 2 way to fit the wrong driveshaft,(wide joint), to the correct 70 4speed output shaft,(small joint).

There all large joint after 70. Auto or 4 speed.

I think you got the wrong ones. Your u-joint should be a 790 also called a 1330 u-joint. I think they gave you 785's which are also called 1310 u-joints. Either way they are wrong.

To finish the story I went by Napa today and picked up a pair of u-joints, greaseless and these match the originals. So, Corvette Central has the wrong u-joints for future reference. Either that or the wrong joints in the right box.
