Default Proper way to charge a Maintenance Free Batt.?

What's the right way to charge my Dia-Hard Gold, Maintenance Free Battery? Do you have to pop the top covers off the battery while charging a maintenance free battery? I've re-charged it a couple times without taking the battery tops off and it seemed to be fine.

Is it only the maintenance batteries need the covers off while charging?

I wouldn't. What's the point? If the battery needs to be vented, the vents will be there without you having to pull off the tops, maintenance or not. Those should only come of in the event you need to add water/acid.

the tops shouldn't come off when you charge it. it's maintenance free because you never need to add water.

I have been using these batteries for years - no issues. Leave the covers on and just recharge it - it will be fine.

You need to take the covers off of the "wet" batteries to let the gases escape - sometimes, they would blow the covers off if the vent holes got clogged.

Actually, you aren't supposed to add water. I forget what it is but you can ruin one, I've had it happen.

My understanding of the "Maintenance Battery is this; It was developed in-order for the cars (Chevy Vega's) to be transported by train, were the cars are lined up in a vertical train-car carrier. The rear of the car was pointed down and the nose was pointed up. This allowed for more cars to be placed (shipped) on each train-car. The sealed battery would not leak acid in this configuration. No battery should use water (acid) unless there is something wrong with the charging system. Over-charging, etc.
