Default 700R4 question

I read in a post a while back on this board that a 700r4 is not able to be dropped from the bottom of a C3 due to it's size comparative to a TH350. I think it was mentioned the engine needed to be removed for the transmission to be installed/removed.
If I am remembering this properly, is this also the case on 80-82's? I believe 700r4's were employed in the 82's, weren't they? If so, is there a crossmember that can be used to ease tranmission installation/removal?
Also, similarly, if the overdrive trans. is used, can the lockup feature be retained, or would a non-lockup feature need to be installed?

Thanks again everyone.

Yes the 700r4 came in the 82. There is a crossmember that comes out
for removal. I used a brake signal siwtch for lockup and nonlockup.

not sure where you are going with this...i have a 700r4 in my 77 that i put in....it required a different crossmember then the TH350....you can drop this out from the bottom no problem.....i don't know what the cross member is like on the 80-82s. i think only the 82 has the 700r4
i have a lockup converter on my 77 it works in 4th gear and has a brake circuit relay to disengage it when the brakes are on....i also have a switch to disengage it when i am at the bottom range of 4th gear at 30-40 mph...everything is commercially available from BTO

Default Thank you

Thank you for the replies. I am interested in utilizing the 700r4 in our 1980. Looks like I will need to find an '82 transmission crossmember and the rest from the link you supplied. Thanks again.

check out the BTO crossmember the advantage is its up high and tight to the underside of the car allowing you easy space to put a custom exhaust in.....i bet the 82 crossmember has the holes you have to go through.......

Yep, if you get an 82 crossmember you are stuck with single exhaust. There is no issue taking a 700R4 in and out with a removable crossmember car.

There is more than one way to get this transmisson swap done. Either fabricate as much as you can or purchase conversion kits from various vendors on the internet.

The cross member is removable on your 1980 Corvette.
The cross member can be modified for use with a 700R4.
The cross member can be modified for use with dual exhaust.
A 700R4 transmission can be installed/removed from the bottom of the car.
The lock-up feature can and should be used.

There is a LOT of information about the 700R4 or 2004R transmission swap. Search the CorvetteForum archives.

Research is half of the fun.
