Default Dye Prep without SEM

I need to re-dye several interior parts that I've scored along the way as replacements. I have my new lot of dye (multiple cans so they will match) and am ready to go.

I want to prep them properly but every faq or tech tip talks about using SEM vinyl prep first. Since these are not fresh (raw?) vinyl, is this needed? If not, what should I use to prep the parts to remove silicone and other cleaners and residues?

I did my leather steering wheel two weeks ago.I cleaned it with Armorall Oxi Clean. Then used SEM to paint it,rather than a dye.It has held up with no issues.I am going to do the same on the T-top (ovhd)center piece.(I have oyster interior.)

I clean mine with Ivory bar soap and warm water. Ivory is just soap, no oils or fragances and does a good job cleaning vinyl or leather prior to dying. Learned this from a friend in the leather vinyl dying business.

I use Dawn liquid soap on everything I paint. It strips residue off better than anything I've used besides harsh chemicals. After the Dawn cycle, I do a final wipe with rubbing alchohol just to be safe.

I agree with the rubbing alcohol.

Quick question. My leather seats have cracks but no holes. I tried to redye them but the cracks just sucked up all the dye and still looked bad. Is there anything I can seal the cracks with prior to dying? I am not expecting miracles here I just want to touch up everything. Thanks.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I did Palmolive (what I had) and rubbing alcohol. Worked like a charm.

No idea about the leather though. I've had similar issues in the past and tried variuos things with no success.I think that once leather is old, hard and brittle (cracking), then it's old, hard and brittle. Most of the products that I've tried just leaves them slippery.
