chasing down a battery drain
If I leave my 76 parked for more than a day or two without the trickle charger attached, the batter runs dead. I've charged it fully before and used a multi-meter on every fuse on the fuse block to try and find and isolate the circuit. I can only find drain on the fuse that runs the interior lights when the door is open. If I press the little button, the drain goes away. So if I can't find the drain at the fuse box, then were else could it be? could the alternator or starter have something to do with it? If so, how could I check it? The alternator charges the batter fine if/when I need to jump it if I forget to leave the battery charger on.
I know this type of question is asked all the time,
I had a similar problem on one of my other cars. It was a bear to find the problem. I disconnected the negative battery cable and completed the circuit with a continuity light. It was burning, not brightly, but enough to tell me that there was a significant drain. Pulled fuses one at a time until I found one that would cause the light to go out. It turned out to be the dashboard clock, which was broken anyway.
Often times (on earlier models anyway) the light in the boxes behind the seats stays on because the lids aren't closed, which drains the battery. Just a thought...
take the battery out and take it to your local auto parts store that will do a load test on it. i think you will find something wrong. then replace (with an optima lol)
