I have one of the small ones I bought at a local hardware store. The type you would find in your kitchen or garage. I keep it on the passenger floorboard, right in front of the seat. That is, it is laying sideways in front of the passenger seat so the bottom is near the door sill, and the head is near the shifter console. I put velcro on the bracket that came with the unit, and that holds it firmly in place with my 80/20 loop carpet.
Since 95% of the time there is only one person in the car, it poses no restrictions to anyone from getting in the way at that location.
I have many fire extinguishers in the many vehicles that I own. I use an ABC rated dry chemical in them. But in the high performance cars that I have, I use a new type called Firefox. I used to use the Halon type which is now not legal to sell.
The reason that I use the Firefox and not the dry chemical is that the dry chemical is a corrosive powder. If you have ever had to use one, you will see what I mean. IT works extremely well. The problem is that it is nearly impossible to get it completely cleaned up. And if you get it in electrical contacts, good luck!
All of my race cars use the Firefox brand system. And I can tell you that I have had many wrecks which require me to pull the system to eliminate any small fire as I exit the vehicle. And in regards to the cleanup after the wreck,......what cleanup? That saves lots of time and money to get the car back out on to the track.
If you are looking for a cheap and efficient way to put out a fire though, buy the dry chemical. And hope that you may never use it.
Mines mounted right in front of the driver seat. I'm using one of the brackets from vette works mentioned previously with a Halon extinguisher. Quality of braket is good and comes powder coated black with new longer bolts. The only drawback, is the seat cannot be moved up much with the bracket installed. Not a problem for me since I"m 6'3" and always run with the seat all the way back, but if your a little shorter.....could be problem.

I guess I'm late to the party, but I've got the 2 1/2 lb. Amerex Halotron, just like Paul posted in the pic above. Bought it from Griot's. Made my own bracket to mount to front seat bolts.
