It's funny that you asked this question. Apparently, GM was gearing up for the C4 body style and decided to try some parts on the 82. If you look carefully, you have the new batwing style rear in your car. If I am not mistaken, this is a Dana 44. This rear is the same one that is used on the 1984 vettes. I was going to go out and buy some Ujoints because the one that I had on the shelf for my 76 were incorrect ones. But when I compared it to the set that was for my 86, it matched. So I used them. I did not sit down to look at the parts book to see which applications differed. But I will now that you mentioned it.

The 82 U-joints are the larger ones that were also used in many earlier 4 speed cars. Many catalogs have a table which shows just which ones were used for each year-tranny type car.

Chev should have just used these larger ones for all years, no matter if it was 4 spd or auto. Must have been the bean counters at work trying to save a nickel on each u-joint they purchased.

Finally got the 82 out today (Its been raining for a month up here!!!). Felt great to drive her again.

The 80-82 diff is not the same as the C4 one, it's kind of similar but also different The C4 D44 is a much better diff (for example the bearing caps are machined and the case is machined on the cap mating surface, 82 & C4 D36...as cast )

the bearing cap size looks like 1and 1/8 inch .the part number is for a 1984 thru 96 .it might be the same number for other years too .but they must have changed everything .wish they would have changed the gears too something like 3.55 or 3.73 .great improvement when you put it in gear no noise clunking .
