Default tail light question...

On a '76 are the outer tail lights supposed to be lit when the car is in gear?

I can't say that I ever noticed before, but it was just pointed out to me that my backup lights are on when in gear. The battery isn't in my car so I can't check the light functions but I'm curious if I have to chase an electrical problem when I get power again, or if I just shuffled the light sockets when I replaced the bumper cover...

HUH?

You say in the header that the outside lights are on, then mention backup lights. ?

If your backup lights are on when in gear, check your neutral safety switch if it's an automagic.

Don't know if the outsides are on or not... Was just wondering if they were supposed to be without the lights turned on.

No. The car follows the standard wiring convention in that your tail lights should be on only when the headlight switch tells them to be. That refers to the outside lamps. The inside ones are for backup only unless they have been rewired...and different lamp assemblies put in that are not white inside.

Bummer. Hooked up a battery this morning before coming to work and confirmed that the backup lights are indeed on when in gear... Sooo, where does someone find the neutral safety switch on an auto c3? Is it up on the shifter??

Neutral Safety Switch is under the console trim plate and mounted beside the shifter. You may not need to replace the switch. It might only need to be adjusted to ensure the backup lights are not on when the car is in Drive.

With the ignition switch in the run position move the shifter and have someone look and see if the backup lights go out at all. If they do then you need to adjust the netrual safety switch.

Ummm ... you don't think a faulty or mis-adjusted switch is TECH ??
Definitely a tech topic.

Like Pete said - if it goes out while moving the shifter through the gears,
it should be adjusted. If it stays on all the time - then you might have a
faulty switch or wiring.
