I am involved in a discussion on a Mopar site about headers from the factory. I remember that you could order Hooker headers in the late 60s for L88s and Z28s and they came shipped loose inside the car. Does anyone know how this was facilitated? Were there factory part numbers assigned to these headers or how did a assembly worker know to put them in the car or how this was accomplished?
Thanks in advance. darryld1@***.net

Reason: adding email address
Actually they were Kustom headers on the L88 (my friend still has a set of "real" Kustom sidepipes for his L88) but, Thompson Headers in California made the Z/28 Camaro headers. There is a difference in the Kustom and Hooker pipe routing if you look.
From Vette Vues : " Road racing header-side pipes were made by Kustom for the big block Corvette. They had factory part numbers and were available over the counter. They were only dull black in colour, not chrome."
considering a custom built set of headers is $2000+ and the car the Kustom headers would go on would be worth $100K-$250K...$2800 really doesn`t sound too bad.....there is also a guy on the east coast selling a set for $2500....

The "K" in Kustom is backwards I think. The GM part numbers are hand stamped one numeral at a time, not gang stamped all at one whack so they look a little funny.
weren't the L88's built to radical to even come close to their potential without headers.... from what I have heard there is something like a 100hp gain with headers on an L88...... Got to love the factory back doors to power

In the case of the early Camaros, you could actualy order them with the Z/28 package as a dealer installed option for '67 or '68. They were made by Bill Thomas and by Kustom. The flanges have "KH37" stamped on the ones from Kustom but I am not sure about the Thomas pieces. They were shipped in the trunk. The RPO was "Z28-3" or "Z28-4" depending on if you wanted just the headers (-3) or the headers along with the under hood air plenum (-4).
I do not think you could order a Vette with sidemount headers as an option. They were strictly an "over the parts counter" item.

Not true, I had a set of Kustom's in the mid-70's, chrome, not black.
Another note, the Kustom tube is longer than Hooker's by 3-4".
I just got back from Bloomington where there is a Corvette collector selling off some of his "extra stuff"...Kustom headers WITH a GM part number and a set of side pipes NOT new BUT refinished....$5500.00 owns them.

Wasn't OK Kustom bought out by Hooker back in the late 60's??? I thought they were.
My engine builder has one of the 100 sets built by, I thought, OK Kustom out of stainless steel. I believe he paid $1500 back in 69, and they are still on the BB car today.
Will be at a Corvette show tomorrow, and will try a get a picture of these pipes. Seems to me they were, like GDaina said, just a little different than the Hookers. Something in the "twist" of the pipes..........
