I have been out of town, but may have time to get back to work on the car this weekend.
I'm still at the point where nothing happens when I turn the key. I have confirmed the wires going to the starter, and each gets the right voltage at the right time (12V constant, 12V when ignition on, and 12V when key turned to start). Still nothing.
One thing I did notice is that the instrument panel doesn't come alive when I turn the ignition on-- no gauge movement at all. Also, still no click from the coil when the ignition is turned on. I do have an MSD system, so I suppose that may explain the "no click" problem, because I do recall that CD systems don't do this.
Any suggestions on a troubleshooting course of action? The car started fine before I messed with it (naturally).
I found out by trial and error that the rest of the car (I have a '77) is powered from a lead that also attaches to the +12 terminal where the batt connects to the solenoid. It was a red 12 gauge lead with a large eye for me. At first I thought it was a ground wire since when I ohmed it out it appeared to be shorted. I found out quickly that no power here = no power to the HEI and ignition, which is no start under any conditions.
I am finding more hot leads that go to nothing while I do this....
I will be cleaning up the engine compartment wiring too.
Anyway, I pulled the starter and did a home bench-test. Didn't work. Worked fine when I disconnected the wires two weeks ago. Off to Autozone tomorrow.
