I have been doing that for 3 years and it never gets old.
I'm suprised you still can hear??? I found that even with quiet side pipes after 1/2 hour on the expressways my hearing on the phone was bad for a few days. I ditched the side pipes quickly.
I am asuming you run open side pipes and not open headers all the time.

I bet the trip home was like riding in a dream machine. I took mine to the muffler shop with open shorties when I got mine done. Gets plenty of looks from everyone on the road.
I'm doing that pretty soon. Guess I'll try to go early in the morning before the streets are filled with cops. The guy at the muffler shop says "Oh you should be able to get towed in for around $120 - 150."!!! I told him to think about how much beer that would buy and to listen for me coming...

Even with quiet side pipes? What sort of quiet side pipes did you have? Im getting some 69 factory style side pipes.....on a small block...are they really going to be so loud? (I mean I know they are going to be louder than duals, but loud that I cant stand to drive the vette? thats a bum!)

Geez lets see, $120-150 for a tow, or $50-75 for a ticket but get to sound like a dragster on the way there (which you may get out of if you mail a copy of the exhaust work done that day ), hmmmm

Sorry, let me clarify. Headers into custom side exhaust with no mufflers. Still friggin loud! And you are close to the reality when you talked about short term hearing loss. I am used to it though.
When mine went to the shop I called AAA. You pay for the service of emergency towing. I consider no exhaust an emergency. The local tow truck guy used a hydraulic setup that went between my rear tires and then spread out to capture them. He towed the car backwards 35 miles into the muffler shop. It worked a lot better than loading the corvette on a flat bed. It sits so low in the front the air dam from the ground effects will drag. AAA will tow your car for 150 miles no questions asked.
im goign to run open side pipes with no mufflers or extension. im gonna use just the header part will that be any louder then regular side pipes? it really doesny matter becuase ill always be wearing a helmet when i drive it.

In New Jersey it is 3 miles free with a regular membership and 100 miles if you have AAA+ (higher cost membership). I upgraded to AAA+ after paying for a tow home. Also, it is not clear to me that it is "no questions asked." They offer services to get you going, ie battery boost, tire change, fuel. Not sure if you have to try to get it going or not. I took a free flatbed once from my house to my mechanic's garage when my clutch went out. I was able to drive home with no clutch but didn't want to drive to the shop that way.
I did get a kick out of cranking her up with open headers but I never drove on the street that way.

I can't speak for factory sidepipes, but my Hookers-n-JCLs are just right for a muscle-era big block Vette. With the JCL baffles, kids don't hold their ears or run away and nobody complains. I can (and have) cruise at highway speeds for hours on end without the slightest hint of numbness in my ears. and don't have to yell when talking. At 65, the wind noise is just as loud as the exhaust.
