Default Loose Mirror Head

I have a 68-73 drivers side mirror that won't remain adjusted. The socket on the head is no longer tight on the ball of the mirror arm. I remember a good how-to this past winter on disaasemling a mirror and repairing it, but I can't find where I saved the article, nor have I had any luck using the earch feature.

Anybody have this how-to or know how to do the repair?

Thanks!
Jerry

I believe that you have to replace the mirror & support - I dont think you can "fix" it.

I researched it a couple of months ago - several suppliers sell a kit with the mirrors that contains all of the necessary screws and rubber pieces and it can be done with out pulling off the door panel...

That said, I've super-glued them mine in place. Mirrors are still a few slots down the 'ol priority list .

Good luck!

Some may consider this a "Bubba" fix but it worked for me.
Remove the mirror and move the head to a position that's way off of correctly adjusted.
Lay the mirror face down on a flat surface with a towel or something under it.
Use a very sharp center punch and a small hammer to peen a few dimples in the pivot ball of the head. Make sure the locations of the dimples will be inside the mount when the head is correctly adjusted.
Start with a couple of dimples and keep at it until the head is tight enough.
Then reinstall and adjust the mirror.
I know this is crude but it worked with mine and lasted a couple of years. I am the only driver of my car so the mirrors are seldom moved. This 'repair' wouldn't hold up if frequent adjustments are made.

Good luck and all the best, SharkPilot

Alright then, try this:

Soak the sucker in a closed container of laquer thinner overnight to dissolve the glue holding the mirror in place. Remove the mirror, exposing the guts behind. Use a rubber(or more durable material if you choose) gasket/o-ring/washer/whatever to shim the ball more snugly in it's socket. Re-apply the mirror with an adhesive of your choice.

Is that better?
