Has anyone had any luck stripping and dying there interior a new color ?
Im looking at changing my 78 to candy apple red paint with white leather seating...Interior is blue now....would like to go to white or red.
Any advice would be appreciated.
There's no striping needed, clean real well and dye. You might have a problem going to white, it may not cover the old color. Red should be alright. Try a small test piece first. I went from blue to charcoal & it came out great, except the seat belts, had to get black ones.
I used dye from Corvette Central on an 80. I changed from red to black. I do recommend using an acetone cleaner first. The secret is in the cleaning. It took some time to get all the parts correct, several spray applications.
Most all of the vendors sell Corvette America Dye. I got mine from Willcox, had the best price. Get more than you need so that all the cans will be from the same dye lot.
Does anyone know how long the dye last? How durable? Does it clean and armorall well?
Chris
Don't know if you can dye to white... I guess you could try on a panel that won't matter (ie cheap to replace)... As for Armorall well.. Al Knoch recommends using Pledge..Yep Lemon Pledge... You'd be surprised.....Dave..
I loosely followed Lars suggestions. I use some blue shop towel things from Scott. I put some adhesive remover on a small piece of a shop towel. Go over the piece in one direction ONCE, throw piece of towel away. Keep doing this until the towel comes out clean (on mine that's 4-10 times depending on how bad it is) I will run my finger over it to see if there is any stickiness left, go over it once more in one direction/one wipe only. Allow it to dry for a few minutes, then hit it with the dye if need be.
ANY silicone causes fish eyes and generally will make your life hell. Plus the sticky mess of an interior that I brough home. Use some water and a towel before hitting it with any interior care products. Down the road you'll thank me
Cleanliness is definetly the KEY for interior dye. I used duplicolor black interior dye and am changing mine to black from brown. It's worked very well for me thus far on plastic and soft vinyl pieces.
I am changing the interior color of my 1970 Coupe from black to red. Basically. I've bought new repro interior parts. I've tried to repaint (redye) a few interior black pieces with no success. Some of the repro interior pieces don't fit well. It's going to be a battle. The Al Knock repro stuff fits really well!! No problem with Al Knock. PC products is another story.
Its amusing to read that people with red interiors want to change the interior to black. For my situation, I want to change my interior from black to red!!! I always wanted a C3 with the bright red interior.
If it's the original color you should be able to clean & paint it with no problems. Just make sure you use the right primer for the right parts. I believe the stuff most all the Vette places carry is SEM http://www.sem.ws/
I did a RE-dye in my interior. 'stripped' the old paint using laquer thinner, primed with Sand Free and sprayed a custom-mix of SEM. Turned out pretty good.
Hi Everyone , just wanted to say thanks , my husband had stripped all the interior parts out of the vette and had the list to reorder new , but then i saw the post on here about dyeing the parts , went to sem site , found a local car company that had it , they mix the color right there and put it in spray can's for you . It was 18.00 a can , but it works great ! They sold us the cleaner , primer , and paint . It takes a few coats but looks really great ! Now we only need to order the seats or covers . any suggestions on those ?
Thanks again for a great site with great people !!! Pamela
p.s. will post pics of the new look , it was originally tan, but was painted red , taking it back to tan .

I would imagine it would be hard to dye from a darker colour to a lighter colour...i.e from black to red, or from blue to white.
One of the things I definitly had to have on my vette was a black interior...I found so many nice cars with other interior colours, but I didn't give them a look because I had to have black....and dying wasn't an option because I didn't want any difficulties.

Yes it is, and will turn out darker unless the proper vynal/plastic primer is used. Follow the primer instructions closely and it will turn out just fine.
