Hello Ladies and Gentlemen! I have recently received permission from the wife to buy a toy and I am looking into a C3. Unfortunately I live on the island of Oahu, Hawaii and it is very difficult to find a car. Soooo...I have a couple of questions for you all, if you don't mind:
There is a service member here who has a '78 L82, 4spd for sale. The body and interior is in good shape; no cracks in fiberglass, no tears in leather- it seems like it would be a fun car to learn simple interior/exterior restoration. The engine appears to be the original with 78k miles on it. The engine, too, is in decent shape, but it needs to be "sharpened up" a bit. I drove the car and loved it.
I have looked at different pricing guides and still have no idea what this car might be worth. He is asking 12,500, but went to 11,500 after I showed him the web sites that I had looked at- he was pricing his car using nadaguides, which I think are a bit overpriced; my 2002 protege listed at 3k higher than edmunds and kbb.
Any opinions? I wish I had pics to show you guys...sorry 'bout that!
Pat
PS- Posted same questions to "Corvette Action Center" forums, so sorry 'bout the double post for some/most/all? of you! :P
Those cars run between $7,000-12,000 here depending on condition. Over there prices are higher for everything so it might be an $8,500 car elsewhere, I couldn't tell. You should look it over good and do some research on them so you know where and what to look for. Then decide if it's what you want. The drivetrain and suspension are the same as they were since 1965~more or less. Take a vacation to Ca or AZ to look too
Thanks! I know that it this '78 will need to be repainted, the engine will have to be given special "attention" for mods, upkeep, etc, and the interior could use some work. Frame, to me, was in pretty damn good shape. Offered him 10500 last night through email and he says he will stay in touch with me. Hehe...hope I didn't insult him.
Just in case, if any of the well-known members of the forum here have a car for sell and would be willing to work the price of shipping into the price of the car (you'd have to handle shipping and I'd pay you for it), please post pics/prices here. I'll post in the 'wanted' forum so that anyone can post replies.
You ought to contact the Hawaii Corvette Association and see if any of their members have a car for sale or know of any. They meet at Pearl City mall? there on Oahu.
Not sure what the mark-up is for Hawaii, but $10,500 for a '78 is no insult. I"m assuming it's not an anniversary model. It IS an L82 vs an L48 and is also a 4-speed, so those are positives in your favor. I bought my '75 coupe last year for $6500, and it had a nice running motor and decent interior. Have only had to do cosmetic things to it. Personally, I think you can get it less than the $10.5K. But then again, the state of Hawaii is a little smaller than the rest of the U.S., so I guess you're limited in your choices. Good luck and enjoy the one you get.
