Crunch, grind, thump. Broke the ring gear off the carrier and everything came to a halt. I was picking up my ticket after a 1/4 mile pass. It totally let go pulling away from the booth. Fortunatly not at 100+ mph.
We had a matching mumbers 69 350-350 come in on a flat-bed.
A hole thru the pan. I asked him (an 18 year old kid) if he heard any noise before it blew. He sais no. He had a 2,000 watt stereo!
sort of like a grrrrrrt, grrrrrrt ,grrrrrrrrt....... did this when ever i would go up or down an incline.... come to find out it was the rear bumper stop support on the t-arm that was hella bent down and when ever my half shafts was change angles, they would hit the support plate......
and then last week when i took the vette out of the first time in 2 years, i heard a kert, kert, kert.... it was my fan hitting my shroud due to a blown out mouter mount...
Translation: accel. stuck, I'm beating the pedal with my foot, got on the brake very hard and was burning rubber trying to hold it, car backfired, then 1/2 shaft tore apart at left rear, me cussing........
Peeled out of driveway in reverse...threw it in second and popped the clutch. Tranny was still in reverse due to the muncie design which keeps the reverse gear engaged if you're moving backwards even if you have shifted into another gear.
Did the stupid thing of going WOT on wet pavement...clutch packs just kept banging back and forth trying to get some traction until the clutch hub shattered. I looked back and couldn't see any parts on the road, but from the sound I expected my entire rear end to be in pieces spread out along the road.

My old Quadrajet needed a rebuild BADLY, had bad hesitation from a stuck float and the car finally died on the highway...
2) CLUNK!
After getting into my car and closing the door one night, the pin that holds the actuating rod from the outside door latch to the actual latch mechanism broke through - rod fell to the bottom of the door.
3) psssssssssssssssssssssss
Flat tire Something punctured it pulling into my garage the same night #2 occured!
4) thop-thop-thop-thop-thop
Second time driving on my full-size spare after #3, the tire popped off the wheel lip and made this rather unpleasant sound as it flopped around...

BANG. The sound of a ring gear bolt being locked solid between the ring gear and pinion gear.
My rear end rebuilder said the lazy, drug addled @#&! on the assembly line, during the late '70s, never put Locktite on the bolts, as required. He has seen a lot of these.
BTW, one of the loose bolts put a hole, in the cast iron cover, like it was shot with a .223 AP round.

Slideshow: A Jaguar designer's personal project imagines what a modern front-engined Corvette might look like if Chevrolet revisited the golden age of the Stingray.
