Default i have been double thinking about

well, i have been double thinking about my project 77 to a 75 conversion in order to avoid smog stuff when i leave to cali....... one side says go for it but the other says just deal with it and get smog.... even though i'll be out 2500 for the smog and exhaust and i don't have that kind of cash now to do it...... i can drive it in cali for a little bit but soon i'll have to get that stuff and probably only have it on for a year if the 30 exemption continues......... this is really getting to me and is there any other way to know if a 77 was 'converted" to a 75...i.e. markings/numbers somewhere else i don't know about?

I have a 75 windshield frame pillar I am saving for now.
How do you intend to "convert it" ? By switching VIN tags with a clear set from a 75 ?

Technically, there is a stamping on the frame - top of driver's side kickup.
You typically need to lift the body to read it well, so they are rarely checked,
if at all. You could argue that the frame was a replacement.

Good luck and be careful

I'm pretty sure the VIN number tells them all they need to know.
Do like boat owners do and register it in another state
Not sure how legal but that might be enough for you 1 year interprolly.

That's a double-edged sword. If you get pulled over (and you will), cops will want to see a MI license (and a good excuse as to why you're "just visiting"). MI license = PITA when trying to do simple things like bank accounts, utilities, credit, school, etc. You'll have to keep the car insured in MI, too. If you get in an accident in CA, after telling your insurance company the car is garaged in MI, things might get complicated.

Also, the roadside smog-sniffers can catch you, too.

Been there, done that. Might be able to tap-dance for a year, but then it gets old.

CA Legislature repealing the new 30 yr. "rolling" exemption rule? Not likely...

You're moving from the Motor City to "Tree Hugger Central"...

My advice...(if you want it): Leave the Vette stored in MI. Go to Cali. and check it out. Buy a motorcycle or cheap ricer. After determining whether you'll stay, then re-visit the Vette/smog issue.

With gas approaching $3/gal. in Cali., having a Vette as your daily driver will drain you financially. 2 hr. commutes are very common in Los Angeles. Especially tough on a "youngster" starting out all over again in a new city/state (CA property, taxes & vehicle registration, for example, are triple or quadruple of what you're used to in MI).

Spending all that money/effort to "convert" your car, or install smog, will be a waste if you decide to return to MI.
