I have a 78 with the old style 2-piece astro tops (the ones that screw on), and one of the screw plates shattered today. I mean shattered, it is in about 15 pieces. I called Thomson and they say those have not been made in something like 10-15 years, thus parts are not available.
What would CF recommend? As I see it, my options are as follows (in price order)
I can build a new plate from steel or aluminum stock.
I can buy one of the newer 1 piece tops that screw on.
I can buy a new set of tops with the aluminum frames.
If you can't repair your broken part the buy factory tops. I had the one piece top and hated it. It leaked wind and water, the fittings looked cheap and the whole thing felt cheap. Over 70 mph I thought it was going to come off.
Well, I talked to Thomson today, and they told me that it was not worth billing me for the parts, so they are going to send me a free pair of the new metal adaptors that they made for those systems.
